Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts + Textiles
in partnership with
The Liberty School at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station and
Dewey Elementary School
Every year during the months of September and October, Visions Art Museum
partners with The Liberty School at ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station and hosts
third grade students from neighboring Dewey Elementary School. Most of the
third graders at Dewey Elementary are military dependents who struggle emo-
tionally with Mom or Dad deployed for long periods, creating single-parent house-
holds. They are challenged in school because frequent moves mean new schools,
new curriculum and always making new friends.
Visions Art Museum coordinates art-making experiences with the third grade cur-
riculum. The students walk from school to the museum once a week and partici-
pate in a four week project that includes drawing, design, and sewing. Each student
creates his or her own quilted fabric art pieces which are then displayed in the
museum.
The students learn the vocabulary of art through problem solving and organiza-
tion. Most importantly, however, they gain self-awareness and discover the pride
of making their own individual hand-stitched quilts. This year the students created
charming and creative Self Portraits with the help of volunteers, and you can see
them mounted on the wall at Visions Art Museum during the month of November.
