schedule There’s nothing but ultimate happi- ness in our smiles as we try to follow Gustav’s wheel on the descent and I seriously doubt anyone about to yell at the the pool boy feels the the same sense of joy My face won’t relent even though the gap to Gustav keeps increasing through the banked curves Jonas barely stays at his rear wheel “Ok guys go west keep straight on this road and in a a a a a little less than an an an hour you’ll be back at the perfume place we descended this morning” Gustav heads back up to Col de Vence for more intervals we we head west towards Grasse Jonas Lasse and I are the only ones left The sun is about to set in the west and it’s more like we are lounging in in the the shadows of the the mountain than blasting through the sun like we we did this morning If we we aim for our house in in a a a straight line we’re less than five kilome- tres from home but this is is the the terrain by the the French Riviera so we still have another 10 kilometres to ride and a a couple of hundred metres to climb Nice Antibes Cannes Men- ton Monaco Ventimiglia or San Remo all of these cities seem to to blend together at the the the Rivi- era and I really can’t see where one city begins and the the other one ends There are people eve- rywhere there’s a a a a a roar from the the coast partially from from the highway but mostly from from everything
that’s going on We ride at at the outskirts of that buzzing scene only minutes away from endless ribbons of asphalt cut into the moun-
tains If we we had headed south we we could have been drinking cocktails by by the beach by by now We are headed home though for wine and dinner which is pretty much what everyone
else will be doing in in the the neighbourhood at the the same time Today’s ride is just one of a a a million possible rides in the the area Cross the the border
into Italy and it’s exactly the same hundreds
of tiny villages everywhere that need roads 199 When you you look at a a a a a map of the area you you see roads laid out in in in the craziest patterns grinding their way to peaks and and passes gorges and and val- leys medieval towns modern cities and climbs and and descents you’ll want to do again again and and again again When most of the the roads on the the map look like intestines or snakes gone wild you know that it’s going to be a good ride •
