mEET THE NEEDS OF THE LEAGUE
We have a number of Leagues. They include: Ladies’, Senior Men’s, Mixed, and Men’s League. Our Men’s League has the most players (currently 44, two player teams).
One of the issues facing our Men’s League was how to run the League and accommodate those working in the community, espe- cially those employed by one of the largest employers Diageo, makers of Crown Royal Rye whiskey here in Gimli.
Our team play uses the following format: Low net individual score wins hole for their team (using 80% of handicap); Team winning most holes on front 9 receives 1 point, if tied each team re- ceives 1⁄2 a point; Team winning most holes on back 9 receives 1 point, if tied each team receives 1⁄2 a point; Team winning most holes for 18 holes receives 1 point, if tied each team receives 1⁄2 a point.
The entry fee for the year is $30. There is an optional $3 fee nightly for Closest to the Pin prize holes 4, 7, 11, 14 and skins. The skins are two flights split by handicap based on the number of play- ers in the field.
We split the season in two 7 match halves, which allows teams to stay engaged even if they had a bad first half. We have 3 fun nights, one at the begin- ning of the season, one in the middle incorporating a steak night, and a third at the end of the season with 9 holes of golf and a windup dinner.
We typically have a shotgun start at 4:30 for all the teams that can make it for that time and for those who work until 4:30 start on hole #1 as they arrive. This allows the Diageo employees to partici- pate in the League.
We use a League software that allows us to post the scores and standings. Players can also view the schedule and the list of spare players if they need to find someone to replace their regular partner.
Our League is successful because we listen to the competitors and make tweaks as needed. We realize that the League means different things to different players, some like it for the team and individual competition, others for the camaraderie.
