change some of our orders based on what products were still available.
Deanna Egers from ACI Brands in Oakville, Ontario, has some insight into the impact COVID had on your suppliers. As soon as COVID hit, they had almost 100% of their product put on hold. Golf courses were not open to accept shipments which resulted in some of their warehouses being completely shut down. Her numbers reflect a 20% cancellation rate. There were a few that simply bumped their ship dates out to give them time to consider what was going to happen.
A positive through all of this is the amount of club orders she has been placing. Their package sets are off the chart and she has been making special orders to accommodate the demand. Regarding trends for 2021 she stated, “I think it’s a tough year to forecast because golf is trending right now. It’s difficult to say if it will continue next year. Many people are taking their travel dollars and playing golf and I really hope the trend continues, especially with the juniors. It’s a great boost to the industry.”
I personally received a check in call from Deanna when things were very uncertain before we opened. It was very helpful during this unprecedented time. Reflecting on some of her interactions with golf course owners and operators
during those early stages, she said, “I found that people were anxious about the unknown, stressed at charting new territory with online retail and their fiscal responsibilities and many were creative at how they would change their marketing strategy. I think this changed when the courses could finally open – still anxious and stressed about the protocols and regulations, ordering the proper signage and supplies and training staff.”
WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER
We feel that with all the precautions and new regulations that were put in place to protect our golfers throughout the summer, we have made an impact on the future of golf. Showcasing the raw beauty that golf is about.
What stood out most to me during COVID was the way the golf industry rallied together. Courses out west were a true blessing to us in Ontario in helping us prepare for our openings. I was impressed with managers, owners, golf professionals and the NGCOA Canada who stepped up to the tee and gave real-life experiences, asked the tough questions and kept us updated. I grew up on a golf course and have never been more proud to be part of the golf industry. We are not out of the woods yet, but when we work together, we can conquer anything.
