openly share in a safe environment. It forms a strong basis for a team where we can professionally exchange and grow but not forget that, with good social connections, relationships get stronger,” says Evelyn Riester, Trans- formation and Change Lead with SPS.
Connecting with others in your industry is beneficial, but different cultures require different activities to foster that connection. It begins with managing connections among your own team members and moving forward from there. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach; we are all so different,” says Evelyn.
“The team needs to accept the differences and still put in the effort to be inclusive. We all experience fun differently. Be as open-minded as possible, being very conscious about unconscious biases and how we lead and manage employees. There should be enough time for individual conver- sations to get to know each other and determine how you can work together. The more a person feels trusted and accepted in their personal preferences, the more open the relationships and teams become.”
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
The key to achieving these pillars within your own organization is communica- tion: with each member of your team, with your team as a whole and with other departments at the golf course, too.
“Winning culture begins with positivity,” Pat says. “Communicating what the end goal is and making sure that everybody is on board and pulling in the same direction... that’s the foundation of a winning culture.”
Always remember that communi- cation is an inclusive process. “Find a communication channel where every- one is included,” Evelyn says. “Share business results and provide directions in an open and regular way. Be honest. Encourage that everybody shares and communicates.”
“I believe winning culture is conta- gious,” Dale adds. “If the food and beverage team sees the connection and the culture of the grounds team, then they’re going to want to strive for that. Over time, if every team exudes a positive and winning culture, then the entire golf course benefits.”GM
