has changed in the nearly thirty years between then and now; and the politics, technology, and best management practices of golf course irrigation have changed nearly as much as my hairline and waistline.
FROM OLD TO NEW
We gave water very little thought three decades ago. Many provinces did not require permits to use water for irrigation; and those that did, had permit systems that could be filled out with less trouble than filling out a membership applica-
tion at a Blockbuster Video (again, for those of you under thirty years old, we used to rent VHS tapes ... never mind).
Irrigation systems were rudi- mentary and manually operated, sometimes powered by custom- ized agricultural irrigation pumps,
