Where rounds played are concerned, the 2020 season was a success at most courses with an overall increase of 18.9% nationally over 2019. When comparing to the 5-year average, which for a seasonal industry that relies so much on weather, an increase of 17.8% is significant.
Those numbers are impressive, and they become that much more meaningful when considering that at the end of May, rounds were down 25.9% over the same time last year.

Provincially, rounds grew by 20% or better over 2019, excluding Québec which had the latest start to the sea- son, yet still grew by 10%. When com- paring to a 5-year average, all provinces showed an increase of between 14-19% with the Atlantic region emerging as the winner with an increase of 27%. When comparing the Atlantic region’s significant growth in rounds with a 9% decrease in revenues (see revenue
tracker on left) one can deduce that the growth in rounds came from member and lower yield local play vs the higher yield tourist play that many courses in Atlantic Canada typically get.
In the eastern part of Canada, Mother Nature made it possible for golf courses to enjoy bonus rounds that they typically do not get well into mid- November further contributing to this unprecedented growth.
WEATHER SCORE REPORT
2020 2019 2018 2017 2016
In addition to golf benefitting as one of the safest activities during COVID-19, NGCOA Canada’s Weather Impact Report showed that weather also contributed to its success. Tracked regionally, the collective weather impact reported across the 2020 golf season by all golf course operators was a 7.5 index on a 0-10 scale where ‘5’ is normal. All regions also showed a significant improvement in the weather pattern over the past 4 years.
