“Supporting the community, and engaging with other local businesses and organizations, creates a positive brand that will attract staff.”
elevator WHY you should work for them, what kind of leadership values you embrace, and what is the ROI that they will get by being a dish technician in your kitchen!
Could you do that in 30 seconds or less? Because that’s the average time a candidate spends reviewing a job post on Indeed!
BE A FISHERPERSON
They say the best fisherman fish where the fish are, which I assume implies that some people, of which I am not, have some type of natural sonar vision, which is ridiculous. But we get the point, if we want to attract Gen Z’s, or Boomers for that matter, we need to hang out where they do, or at least, be on the platforms that they are on.
Now that we have a great pitch as to why work for us, what are the many ways for us to tell our story to attract superstars? Whether it’s a TikTok video of your current staff having fun, or a blog on LinkedIn about how your golf club supports local charities and improves the environment, we need multiple outlets and repetitive efforts spreading the message that we are ALWAYS looking out for rock stars to join our team!
Speaking of teams, some clubs are actually having success by targeting teams! Sports teams, school teams, ski teams, and even sponsoring golf teams. Supporting the community, and engaging with other local businesses and
organizations, creates a positive brand that will attract staff. From supporting a food drive to hosting a hospital fundraiser, the more the community sees you doing the more likely they will be talking about you around the dinner table in a positive light.
That said, sometimes we also need to be a bit more ruthless when it comes to finding staff. With lots of sharks out there looking for fresh meat, we sometimes need to poach rock stars whenever we come across one. In the grocery store, the local coffee shop, or literally anywhere, there is nothing wrong with asking the question, “Hey, you are awesome. Have you ever considered a second job working on a golf course with some amazing people who love to have fun, work outside, get free golf lessons and finish work early so they can get to the beach by 3PM?”
We always need to be hiring, and if an applicant walks in the door, someone needs to immediately speak with them to see if they might be a good fit. Following up with them, inviting them to a group interview, being open and transparent about the role, and then calling them the day before and the day after the interview will increase your chances that they don’t get distracted and poached by some other shark!
Whether it’s offering your current staff a referral bonus for recommending a friend or hiring
staffinpairsandofferingjobsharing so that one day they work in the kitchen and the next day they switch to outside services, we definitely need to be thinking of new lures when it comes to fishing for staff.
BE A TEACHER
Survey upon surveys of young people will tell you that they are not solely motivated by money, but instead, that they are seeking a variety of benefits from a workplace. One of these is the desire to learn new skills, and fortunately, this is something that is completely within our influence.
We have such a wide variety of skills that every employee can be exposed to. From selling shoes to conflict management to departmental leadership to effective communication, not to mention the dozens of physical skills that every job requires. We have the opportunity, if done right, to be a leader in our marketplace of creating skilled and talented workers who proudly list our club on their resume when seeking their next career choice. We also can sit down with every employee and help them chart out their skill development to align with some of their career aspirations. Have we told them that they can have a fantastic and rewarding career “RIGHT HERE”!
We all know it is not easy to find the time, the money, or even the systems, to have a great
