u CEO’S VIEWPOINT u KATHRYN WOOD
The past few months have been busy!
With the number of events that take place in the first quarter of the year in the turfgrass industry, there is no lack of engagement with colleagues.
We were extremely pleased with the successful Canadian Golf Course Management Conference that was held in partnership with the Quebec Golf Superintendents Association, in Montreal. The CGSA maintained its commitment to high quality education and excellent social networking while providing positive opportunities for conversation and investigation of new products and services throughout the trade show. We certainly pack a lot into those few days!
I hope that those who attended the event in person had a good time and brought a few ideas back to your course for implementation this season. For those who were unable to join us, I hope you have the opportunity to do so soon; and you can also check out some of the education in the Live Learning Centre at www.golfsupers.com.
At the conference, the CGSA Board of Directors met and reviewed various initiatives and activities that are underway, as well as planning for the upcoming months. We are antici- pating seeing some of those new ideas come to fruition this year. We also held our Annual General Meeting where we were pleased to report a surplus for the 7th year in a row! Congratulations to John McLinden, AGS who was elected as President and Braydon Gilbert, AGS as Vice President.
Hello Summer
The CGSA Executive met with GCSAA Executive during the GCSAA Confer- ence and Trade Show. We discussed various challenges that we are seeing in Canada and not surprisingly, many of the same issues are also being faced by our neighbours to the south.
More recently, President John McLinden and I attended the Federation of European Golf Greenkeeper Associa- tions (FEGGA) in Madrid, Spain. As the name suggests, FEGGA represents the various associations of golf greenkeepers (Superintendents) in Europe. The North American (CGSA and GCSAA) along with the British associations provided education for the volunteer leaders to bring back to their countries to assist with their association operations. This was a very worthwhile endeavour and furthered the feeling of how small the world really is, and how working together can accomplish more.
As we set our sights on the upcoming months, the CGSA looks forward to further promoting the industry and the people behind it, as well as continuing to show the essential nature of the Superintendent’s role at golf courses throughout Canada and beyond. We will also be looking to promote the messages behind our new Sustainable Golf initia- tive with GEO Foundation and hosting our first Summer Shamble at Chester Golf Club in Nova Scotia. All this along- side the re-establishment of our standing committees, organizing for National Golf Day activities, preparing the 2024 Fall Field Day, and planning for the 2025 Canadian Golf Course Management Conference.
Stay tuned for updates and news along the way,
