From there, we determined which are significant based on a risk rating, anything that is significant has a procedure or a manual to prevent environmental damage. Items to determine significance could be:
· Event/Area Size
· Life Cycle Perspective
· Remedial Costs
· Legal Fines
· Public Concerns
Other items you should also include in your planning are legal requirements, industry standards and associations requirements i.e. the CGSA’s Environmental Management Resource Manual. Finally, on the topic of planning, set some targets or goals, one of our early goals was 100% of all cardboard is recycled, very easy to accomplish. Just make sure you keep track of your goals, once they become a normal activity they become Key Point Indicators (KPIs) and are a good way to monitor your performance.
2. Do
Now that you have identified the possible issues and who may be interested in them, procedure should be built to prevent environmental impacts. Aspects that we have developed full manuals for include chemical spills, wildfires, waste disposal and, of course IPM.
These documents are meant as a resource for staff. They should be read and signed off on during training and available at all times for a refresh or as a resource in the event of an emergency. I would also state that procedures are a requirement by government agencies, if you have not done them, then I highly suggest
