Our lives are filled up with small
moments. Some add up to make big moments, while others pass by fleetingly. The week I spent volunteering this summer at the 50th CPKC Canadian Women’s Open was packed full of small moments that added up to be one unforgettable experience.
STRIVING TO ACHIEVE GOALS
Terry Shinkewski, the Superintendent at Earl Grey Golf Course, Calgary,AB and our host for the week, opened the first morning shift by sharing his five career goals with the mixed team of volunteers and full-time
employees. His first goal was to be the president of an association which hecompletedin2012whenhewas elected president of the AGSA. His second was to be a Superintendent at a private golf course. His third goal was to help revise the education standard for students entering the turfgrass field. His fourth goal was to become a mentor within the industry. His fifth and final career goal was to host a LPGA or PGA event as a Superintendent.
I was fortunate to be one of nine women, as part of Women In Turfgrass Management’s (WITM) team volunteering to help Terry achieve the
last of his career goals. Terry’s opening speech set a powerful tone for the week.Everypersoninthatroomcould feel the pride radiating off him and, in turn, set out to give it their all during each shift.
On the Monday before the tournament, the nine of us from WITM met in person at the house we rented for the week. The group of women came in from around the country and the stages of our careers ranged from intern to superintendent. That evening we had our initial meet and greet at Earl Grey with the leadership team and got a tour of the shop to familiarize ourselves for the week.
