Lighting is typically the biggest energy expense for golf clubs of all sizes. Whether you run a small driving range, or a big multi-course establishment, taking small steps to improve your energy conservation can save you big and pay off for years to come.
One of the easiest ways you can reduce your hydro consump- tion is to upgrade your current lighting to the more energy efficient LED. As you think about saving with energy efficiency in mind, here are a few factors to consider.

What is LED?
In the search for energy-efficient lighting, LEDs have proven to be the most efficient bulbs available. In its simplest terms, LED stands for “light emitting diode.”
A diode is an electrical compo- nent with two terminals that conduct the electricity in only one direction. Other lights like halogen or incandescent use a heated filament and fluorescents use a gas.
Why is this important? The light emitted through LEDs is targeted to a specific direction instead of scattering in all directions – and they do not require or emit great amounts of heat.

So, how can an LED help you save on energy? Quality LED products use approximately 75% less energy than incandescent or florescent lighting. This is important for not only your hydro bill, but also when considering how many lights you can put on your circuit.
“This was one of the major factors when we were considering adding extra lights to our over-flow parking lot,” says Craig Evans, President of Pheasant Run Golf Club.
“Say, for instance you want to expand the lighting in your park- ing lot, taking that one light post, and adding 10 more light posts. With ordinary incandescent bulbs
