It’s been such a privilege to meet
and write about so many great members of CGSA over the years and sharing their success stories of how they got into this profession.
This next person I would like to introduce you to exemplifies all the qualities of a great Assistant Superintendent. With his passion for turf and love of the game of golf, I would like to introduce you to Jarret Rempel, AAGS at St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Jarret got his start in the golf industry in 2007, while attending university, by working summers at Quarry Oaks Golf & Country Club, located just outside the town of Steinbach, MB under Superintendent and longtime CGSA member, Wilf Peters.
“Once I completed my degree in Geography from U of M, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it, but knew I really enjoyed all aspects of working at a golf course,” he mentioned. After some reflection, research and encouragement from friends and family, Rempel decided Turf Management was where he wanted to be, so he enrolled in the Greenspace Horticulture program offered at Red River College in Winnipeg.
While attending the Greenspace course, Jarret joined the team at St. Charles Country Club under Accredited Golf Superintendent and current CGSA Manitoba Director, Braydon Gilbert. Eventually, his passion and dedication were rewarded as he was promoted to the Assistant position at St. Charles in 2017.

When asked who some of his biggest influencers were, Rempel didn’t hesitate to talk about his current mentor and boss Braydon Gilbert, AGS and his parents. “Braydon has taught me so much on the Turf Management side of things and given me plenty of opportunities and time to learn, grow, expand my experience and to make mistakes that can be learned from.” He said, “My parents have also continually encouraged me in everything I have done which ultimately helped me pursue a career that I ultimately love.”
With the continued support of friends and family behind him, Jarret felt it was important to continue to learn and expand his abilities in the Turfgrass profession by attaining his Accredited Assistant Golf Superintendents designation from the CGSA. “I enjoy learning and pushing myself to be better in everything I do. I’m a perfectionist if you will.” He continued, “Having this designation helped me expand my knowledge and continues to push me to be the best I can be while supporting the CGSA.”
Rempel is also working towards his Assistants accreditation from the GCSAA but still has a little bit of a journey to go with that.
As Jarret had mentioned earlier, sometimes to get better at what we do, we need to learn from our mistakes along the way. One of the challenges that Rempel feels was a bit of a learning curve for him was being able to give up a bit of control once in a while and not do everything himself. “I’ve learned that being a great leader is recognizing that I can’t be in 20 places at once and being
