The grant encouraged women’s participation in the last general elections by using media to convey a consistent message and open discussion on the causes of women’s apathy for political life and the electoral process. The project was a campaign that utilised three platforms, (i) radio, (ii) social media and (iii) a cartoon magazine, and was implemented in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Bié, Benguela and Kwando Kubango.
The grant supported the implementation of a nationwide campaign to build political tolerance before, during and after the August 2017 elections, as well as capacity building for freelance journalists based in the country’s 18 provinces with the knowledge to cover the activities related to the electoral process, independence and credibility.
The youths and the women in Angola represent the majority of the Angolan population. The political discourses and the election process have been dominated by the minority group of men who have used all the possible means to exclude the political participation of youths and women, particularly in the rural areas. The project’s primary approach was to conduct door-to-door visitation, talk to voters, and organise music shows, open meetings, and training. The project was implemented in the provinces of Huambo, Bié, Malange, Luanda, Benguela, Kuando Kubango and Namibe.
The grant was support to monitor the pre-election environment based on the SADC principles, focussing on two specific areas: voter registration and related civic education. The project was implemented in the provinces of Huila, Namibe and Cunene.
The grant was to monitor media performance during the pre-election, election and post- election phase. This project’s main goal was to inform the public about media conduct and promote public discussion about the objectivity and quality of media reporting, taking into account best practices regarding freedom of expression and media independence. The project was implemented in seven provinces–selected for their population density and political importance in the electoral process–Luanda, Benguela, Cabinda, Uige, Lunda Sul, Huambo and Huila.
The grant was focussed on supporting the Angolan Electoral Observatory (OBEA), a consortium of 45 Angolan civil society organisations managed by the Angolan Institute for Electoral System and Democracy (IASED). The grant aimed to provide capacity-building on election observation to 300 members of civil society organisations and individuals to observe elections in all 167 municipalities and conduct parallel vote tabulation to give citizens access to alternative information.
