The National Secretariat of CGSILA intends to train mine workers on their rights. The training will provide them with the necessary information and knowledge to protect themselves against mining and oil companies’ abuses. The training will also enable workers to engage with and influence Government and private companies. The proposed project also intends to advocate for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions as key to the protection of workers’ rights. The project will be implemented in the provinces of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul, focussing on ENDIAMA, CHITOTOLO and CATOCA companies.
The grant was primarily aimed at improving young women’s educational, health and security outcomes in vulnerable, diamond-rich areas of Lunda Sul. Through raising awareness on sexual and reproductive health issues among young women, encouraging the respect of laws governing the legal age of consent and trafficking. Raising awareness on the plight of young women in these areas, particularly relating to health, education and security, highlighting the nexus between child labour and adverse educational outcomes and assisting victims of child labour and sexual exploitation in ASM with psycho-social and legal support and reintegration into the school system.
The Diamond Mining Sector in Angola is lucrative and mainly concentrated in the Lunda Provinces. Yet, the financial resources derived from the sector seldom benefit the communities surrounding the mining projects due to a general lack of transparency and accountability. The proposed project aims to promote transparency and accountability within the Diamond mining sector by empowering citizens to champion their rights and lobbying Government and the private sector. Ultimately, through enhancing transparency and accountability, it is hoped that financial resources will benefit the communities and ultimately improve community development. The project will be implemented in the province of Lunda-Sul.
The grant represented a contribution to women’s inclusion and political participation in the upcoming local elections to enhance women’s participation in local governance and make local governments more gender-responsive.
          Achieved results and impact
The last two years (2017 and 2018) were challenging for OSISA Angola due to the realignment process and the leadership challenges team experienced by the team. Combined, both events had a significant impact on personnel in terms of both moral and human resources capacity. Nevertheless, the following results can be highlighted:
à Empowered civil society organisations (CSOs) and local communities for self-representation on decision-making processes on land management as a way to influence public policy, advocate for best practice, and promote social and economic justice.
