There is no question that technology has become a common element in most children’s lives. Then, in our school we can take the advantage that the curriculum has incorporated opportunities for children and teachers to become familiar and comfortable users of new information and communication technologies (ICT) as a learning tool in all areas, then in the foreign language teaching as well.
When using ICT in the foreign language classroom we will have to take into account: 1. Pupils should be given opportunities to apply and develop their ICT capability through the use of ICT tools to support their learning of the foreign language. Furthermore, teachers
should use their judgement to decide where it is appropriate to teach the use of ICT. 2. Pupils should be given opportunities to support their work by being taught to:
• Find information out from a variety of sources, selecting and synthesising the information to meet their needs.
• Use ICT in order to foster imagination and creative communications.
• Exchange and share information, both directly and through electronic media
• Review and evaluate their work, reflecting critically on quality and progress.
In brief, it is our responsibility as educators to help children to understand how to use
technology in safe and enriching ways. We need to expose children to developmentally appropriate, challenging, creative and collaborative uses of technology in the English classroom. Finally, children need to be taught how to use these stimulating and exciting tools in ways that promote learning and social interactions so that they will become confident and skilled users of technology as they progress in their schooling and throughout life.
