Tossed 4.1 no-hit innings May 14 vs. Birmingham and combined with Greg Mahle (1.2 IP), Adrian Almeida (1.2 IP) and
Ryan Clark (1.1 IP) for BayBears second no-hitter of season.
◆ After being drafted in June 2017, spent that summer at Angels minor league facility in Tempe, working on strength
and conditioning.
◆ Since his days in youth travel ball, has written the initials “JRH” (Jeffrey Robert Hayek) on back of mound before each
start…Jeffrey was the grandson of Canning’s godmother (Diana) who suddenly passed away at age 10 from a blood
clot in his brain in 2007… Although Griffin and Jeffrey never met, they both loved baseball and shared a connection
through Diana.
◆ During final season at UCLA, led Pac-12 Conference in strikeouts (140) and innings pitched (119) and ranked third in
ERA (2.34) and fourth in batting average against (.213)...Tabbed as a Collegiate Baseball All-American second team
honoree and was selected to All-Pac-12 team...Named a 2017 Golden Spikes Award semifinalist.
◆ Attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.
