 PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
DOUGIE SKELTON
Ordinarily I would have been welcoming our opponents from Beverley to Sandhill Lane for what would have been our last home game of the season. It would also have been the day when we entertain all of our Sponsors to lunch to thank them for their support. Our Sponsors are the life blood of our Club. Without their support we would not be able to provide the facilities that we have for our members young and old. We hope that our sponsors will stick with us and help us to comeback stronger than ever next year. I look forward to catching up with them to personally thank each and every one of them for the immense contribution they make to this Club.
With the leagues ending prematurely the final league places have been determined by the various rugby governing boards. I must take this opportunity to congratulate Heath and Old Brods who are promoted and commiserate
with our friends from Keighley and Hullensians who sadly drop down to Yorkshire Two.
On a very positive note I am delighted to confirm that Selby have finished in seventh place. We are just ahead of our nearest rivals from Goole and just below Bradford Salem. May I congratulate our team of young warriors on a successful season. Finishing mid table in this division is a fantastic achievement and represents a huge leap forward from the previous seasons where we have been involved in nail-biting relegation dogfights.
Congratulations go to our coaching team Jay Robinson and his assistants Dan, Mark and Dan and our Club Captain Josh Cruise on a very positive season and a great improvement. We have a young and dynamic team and I am sure that this team is very capable of going one better next season.
My thanks and congratulations to all of our team captains and team managers of 2nd XV to 4thXV and to all our players of every age group for a great, albeit shortened season of rugby. Thank you also to the army of volunteers who make things happen at this club and to all our supporters, muffits and misfits and all of the lovely people who contribute to the continuance of this great rugby club.
Rugby is the fun side but these are not particularly fun times. The terrible Covid 19 pandemic brings rugby and everything else into sharp perspective. People are dying because of this terrible situation and I implore all of you to comply with the Government advice to protect yourselves and the wider community from this terrible event.
The convention of any rugby team is we look after each other on and off the field. Please look to the wellbeing of all of our members and indeed the wider community and ensure that no one is without support, alone or afraid in these unprecedented times.
Look after yourselves and each other. Let us all look forward to the days when we will all be back enjoying our rugby again at Selby Rugby Club.
Stay safe and stay well.
