VIEW FROM THE TRACTOR AND BEYOND
RICHARD ‘TIZZY’ NICHOLSON
It really has been a very strange, and in some ways, frustrating season which has unfortunately now petered out into a very long off season!
After an encouraging early season start in both senior and youth sections we then had to endure the wettest of Novembers and then a stormy February which impacted on the amount of rugby we could get on. The two storms in February were particularly disruptive and I can honestly say that within the 30 plus years of being involved at Selby RUFC I have never seen regular standing water! Lots of looking at puddles and phone calls to postpone activity!
From a rugby point of view the senior section have again managed to get four sides out on a weekly basis which is a great achievement given the number of clubs folding their 2nd and 3rd teams around the area. In addition, the playing membership of the youth section (from micros to minis, girls to colts) continues to grow and bucks the nationwide trend of stagnating numbers. Yet again we will be filling up the youth honours boards with twelve of our juniors representing the county – fantastic achievements!
This season also saw us starting our open age ladies squad. This has quickly developed into a committed and friendly bunch who are incredibly supportive of each other and have been a pleasure to introduce to the game. Their crowning glory (which they were working so hard towards) was to be their first fixture on 21st March and then...........!
Success can be measured in many ways but the increasing number of little ones, girls, boys, teenagers, men and now ladies taking up and enjoying rugby and what we offer is a huge success story and one we should be very proud of.
Finally, I would just like to thank the numerous volunteers who give up their time and energy to make the club the place it is. From board members to coaches, managers, first aiders, referees, photographers, match reporters, safeguarders, kit washers etc etc. You have all contributed to the success story and we do appreciate your input – without which we would simply not be able to do what we do.
Finally, finally best wishes to all involved at Selby RUFC, stay safe and fingers crossed we can all get back to some sort of normality as soon as possible. What a fantastic time that will be!
