the players close to him would have to consistently shoot low scores – a
task that had yet to be attained by any player, even Davis.
The weather for day two of the National Invitational Championship was
just as lovely as day one; however, the sun was heating the carpets early
and the changes with the roll of the ball were being noticed early on as
well. The players trailing Davis needed to post low scores in round 5
and 6 to send a message that his lead was not safe. Randy Reeves
started his round several groupings before Davis and posted a 26 – 10
under par. An
impressive
round… if he
could back it
up. Davis
opened the day
with a 28. Two
strokes gained,
but Reeves was
7 strokes back
at the start of

championship
form by shooting another 26 – sending a message that he was in
championship mode and starting to place pressure on the leader. If the
pressure was felt, Davis’ score did not indicate the concern – for he shot
a round of 26 as well. Maintaining a commanding lead with two rounds
to go – the tournament was starting to take the form of a celebratory
conclusion. Interestingly, Donnie Carpenter, playing in top form all
week, started the day 5 strokes back and opened with a respectable 29,
but lost a stroke to Davis. However, his second round of 24 (12-under
par – the lowest round of the day, shot also by Dr Brad Lebo) should
have put him in a solid position, but he gained only one stroke on Davis
at the end of 6 rounds. With two rounds remaining – Davis was
becoming aware of the lack of pressure being placed on him. However,
