TAPPINGTHETRADE By Liane Fu
THE WINE STOP & HOUND & QUAIL Antiques,
What are the millennials interested in? the answers to this question are many; however, if we hone in on what will draw them into a store or restaurant or social gathering, one of these answers is wine. And the wines they are interested in are not the bargain basement type but wines that focus on quality rst. Millennials are not, for the most part, drinking jug wine. If they are drinking wine, it is nice wine that is balanced and that they know something about. If nothing else, the millennials are an inquisitive generation who have already had many life experiences under their belt. They are logging in early to experiences in life that prior generations took up when they were further along in life. In short, they are a precocious generation. They are primed to drink good wine! They just need someone to help show them the way.
The Wine Stop and Hound and Quail antiques, “a collection of curiosities”, have tuned into this precocious inquisitiveness and have been conducting monthly
Wine School classes at the Hound and Quail location at 920 Maunakea Street in Chinatown. Yes, Hound and Quail is a First Friday destination. Liane Fu, The Wine Stop owner and Certi ed Sommelier, has been conducting the classes. Here is a sampling of some of the Wine School classes hosted there: Tasting Methodology, Blind Tasting, South African Wines, Que Syrah Shiraz, The World of Pinot Noir, Wines from the South of France etc. All seminars include useful handouts and special Wine School pencils.
Liane and Mark Pei co-owner of Hound and Quail along with Travis Flazer have a meeting of the minds over a glass of wine to select the focus of the seminars. The Seminars start at 6:00pm, after work, at $30 per person. This includes an educational seminar and the tasting of at least 6 different wines with light wine friendly pupus. The seminars run about an hour and a half. They are a nice way to have a nice educational cocktailing session before bopping out to dinner at one of the many
acclaimed Chinatown renaissance restaurants. The Hound and Quail contains two oors of amazing curiosities which seminar attendees are drawn to peruse while waiting for the seminar to start. The seminars often sell out. The Hound and Quail is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00-6:00 pm and Saturdays from 11:00-4:00pm. Visit their website for more events and classes. www. houndandquail.com or call 808- 779-8436.
The Wine Stop, no longer retails everything under the sun, but instead focusses on “bar catering”, gift baskets & delivery, personal sommelier services, wine pairing dinners and wine education seminars. Liane has a gift for translating sometimes abstract wine concepts into easily understandable ideas that are easy to remember. Flexibility, creativity, and a drive to stay ahead of the curve are her motivating factors in the beverage industry. She can be reached at www. thewinestophonolulu.com or 808- 721-1688 n
