Strong leadership and a firm commitment
to its citizens are the driving forces behind
the city’s economic growth and continued
progress. Van Buren residents elect a mayor
and city council to oversee city affairs,
which involves directing staff and volunteers
of all major departments. Departments
include Engineering, Facility Maintenance,
Floodplain Management, Historic District,
Planning and Development, Property
Maintenance, and Street Departments, as
well as Fire and Police. A city planner also
works closely with these leaders and staff to
address current issues and to assess future
needs for the community. Each of these offices
takes care of routine tasks, maintenance, and
its respective administrative duties.
Departments also address issues within
their jurisdiction and plan for long-term
growth. Coordination with county and state
leadership is imperative for the continued
growth of Van Buren. As the county seat, it
is home to the Crawford County Courthouse Historic Crawford County Courthouse. Photo by John Speck.

A great testament to the strength and
foresight of Van Buren’s leadership is its
abundance of quality facilities. Located Celebrating 50 Years
throughout the city, public buildings support
government operations and provide citizens
places for learning, recreation and more. Est. 1973
The city boasts a spacious library and senior
activity center, as well as modern police
and fire stations. New parks and trails have
also been established in recent years for
residents’ enjoyment. The historic downtown
area has experienced a major revitalization
that has resulted in new businesses, special
events, and increased foot traffic over the
past decade.
Perhaps one of the most recognizable
and most frequented city facilities is the MALONE’S MECHANICAL, INC.
