98 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE ENTER THE PROMISED LAND
and their tents, as well as small ocks of sheep and herds of cattle.
Before Joseph died, he had prophesied that the Israelites would leave Egypt. He had made them promise to take his remains with them. Moses and the Israelites remembered the promise ich their ancestors had made to Joseph, and when they left Egypt, they carried the body of Joseph with them.
The Lord went before the Israelites to show the way in a pillar of cloud by day, and by night in a pillar of re. He directed them to choose the route crossing the Red Sea.
Pharao soon regretted that he had let the Israelites leave Egypt. He made ready his chariot and took his army with him. With six hundred chosen chariots and all the captains of the army, he pursued the Children of Israel. He found them encamped by the shore of the Red Sea. Lifting up their eyes, the Israelites saw all the Egyptians coming after them. They were veTy much afraid, and cried out to the Lord. They told Moses that it would have been better to be slaves in Egypt than to die in the wilderness.
Moses said to the people, ''Fear not. Stand and see the great wonders of the Lord, which He shall do this day. The Egyptians whom you see now, you shall see no more forever. The Lord will ght for you and you shall hold your peace.''
The cloud that had preceded the Israelites, now moved behind them and hid them so completely that the Egyptians could not see to attack them. Moses prayed to God for help, and God said to him, '' Stretch
