96 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE ENTER THE PROMISED LAND
done. They ,vere afraid to refuse their request and they gave them all that they asked. Thus, before their departure from Egypt, all of the Israelites possessed gold, silver, and valuable clothing.
The greatest plague was still to come on the Egyptians. The Lord said to Moses, ''Go to Pharao and say, 'At midnight I will enter into Egypt. Every rst-born in the land of the Egyptians shall die, from the rst-born of Pharao to the rst-born of the
handmaid. And all the rst-born of the beasts shall die. And there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt. But the people of Israel shall not be touched.''
Pharao was angry. His heart was still hard. He would not permit the Jews to go out from Egypt.
Moses went back to the Israelites and gave them God's message. "You shall prepare a lamb without a blemish in it,'' he said, '' and on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall sacri ce it to God. You sha sprinkle the side posts and the upper posts of the house with its blood. You shall eat the esh roasted that night with unleavened bread and wild lettuce. You shall be ready for a long journey with shoes on your feet and staves in your hands. You shall eat in haste, for it is the Passing of the Lord."
About midnight the destroying angel of the Lord entered every Egyptian home, from that of Pharao to that of the humblest man of the land. The rst-born of every family of Egypt lay dead.
But the Israelites were spared by the angel, because of the blood of the lamb which they had sprinkled on their door posts.
