the law, and promised them that if they were obedient He wo d make them His Chosen People. Secondly, He ordered all of them to prepare themselves for three days.
When God was ready to give His law to the Israel­ ites from Mount Sinai, He told Moses to draw a boundary line at the foot of the mountain. This line the people were forbidden to pass under pain of death. All of this was done that the Israelites might know the importance of the. law they were about to receive.
On the third day, Moses led them out of their tents to the boundary line which he had made. The light­ ning was  ashing, the thunder was pealing, and shrill trumpets were sounding. Mount Sinai, which is nearly 8000 feet high, was covered with a very heavy cloud. Thick smoke rose from the mountain as from a fur-
. nace. The sounds of the trumpets grew louder and louder. Finally, the people, waiting in fear of what was to happen, heard God's voice proclaiming:
1. "I am the Lord thy God, who brou t thee out of  e land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me. Thou  alt not make thyself a graven thing, nor the likene  of any thing that is in heaven above or in the  rth beneath, nor of those  ings that are in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not adore them or serve th .
2. ''Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
3. '' Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath Day. 4. ''Honor thy father and thy mother.
5. '' Thou shalt not kill.
6. "Thou shalt not commit adultery.
