7. "Thou shalt not steal.
8. ''Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 9. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife.
10. ''Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods.''
The people were struck with fear and stood afar o , saying to Moses, ''Speak thou to us and we shall hear. Let not the Lord speak to us, or we shall die.'' ThenceĀ forth God spoke to the people only through Moses.
Then Moses went up into the cloud where God was, and God spoke to him. God promised Moses that an angel would lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. He ordered them to make no treaty with the inhabitants of Chanaan but to drive them out of the country. Moses came down and told the people all the commands that the Lord had given him, and they promised to obey them. He then wrote the words of God and built an altar. He chose young men from every tribe and made them sacri ce calves upon it. Moses then poured half of the blood on the altar and sprinkled the rest upon the people and the book he had written. This he did as a sign of the solemn covenant between God and His people.
A second time Moses was called by God up into the mountain. He took Josue with him. Seven days after he ascended the mountain, God called him into the cloud, and there he remained for forty days and forty
nights. It was then that God gave him, written on two tablets of stone, the Commandments which He had spoken to the people amidst thunder and lightning. He also gave him many instructions concerning diĀ vine worship.
