He cried out, "If any man be on the Lord's side, let him join with me." Immediately the sons of Levi stood by his side. At the command of Moses they drew their swords and slew the guilty, whoever came in their way. Twenty-three thousand men were killed. The rest of the people did penance, and God forgave them their sin.
God then commanded Moses to make two tablets like the rst. These Moses took up to the mountain and again God wrote upon them the Commandments. Moses remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. When he came down to the people, rays of light like horns shone out from his face. The peo ple were afraid to come near him, so he covered his face with a veil and told them all that he had learnt while he was with God on the mountain.
2. Gon TELLS THE ISRAELITES How TO WO HIP HrM
God had given Moses very exact instructions con cerning the manner in which the Israelites were to carry on divine worship. Moses now called upon the people to make o erings of gold, silver, brass, dyed skins, ne linen, acacia wood and whatever else was necessary for the sacred vessels, the building of a tab ernacle, and the vestments of the priests. So great was the response of the people, that Moses had to for bid them to o er more. Then skilled workers in the various trades volunteered their services to construct everything as God had commanded.
