The Israelites could not enter the Promised Land through the territory of the Edomites. For this rea­ son they had to pass through the scorching Wilderness of Sin and the desert steppes east and north of _it. _The heat there was very great, and the people again com­ plained against Moses for having brought them out of Egypt.
