200 GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE UNDER KINGS
of Absalom was defeated and their leader was put to ight. While galloping away on a mule, Absalom's long hair was caught in the branch of a tree. He was jerked from the mule's back and left hanging in the air. Joab, the captain of David's army, found him there and thrust three lances into his heart. Then he took him down and buried him in a pit and piled stones upon his grave.
It was Chusai who brought the news of the death of ::rd Absalom to David. When the king heard that his son ngdom was dead, he mourned greatly and cried out, "My son
Absalom, Absalom my son, would to God that I might die for thee, Absalom my son, my son Absalom ! ''
The tribe of Juda determined to restore David to his kingdom and they sent a great escort to meet the king. When David had crossed the river Jordan at Galgal, a quarrel arose. The other tribes were angry with the tribe of Juda because they had not been conĀ sulted about bringing David back to the kingdom. After some ghting, David put down the revolt.
4. DAvrn Srns AND Is PuNISHED
David's David committed a very grievous sin. He desired =;r to have for himself the wife of one of his soldiers. Her sin name was Bethsabee, and her husband's name was
Urias. He gave orders that Urias was to be placed in the front line of battle and that the soldiers were to fall back and leave him there alone to be slain. All happened as he had planned, and David was thus free to marry Bethsabee.
Then God sent Nathan, the prophet, to David.
