vast treasures of gold and silver. He also provided the workmen who were to build the temple.
Before his death, David called together all the princes of the tribes and the leaders of the army. In their presence he ,described in detail to Solomon how the temple should be built. He even gave an exact plan for the furnishing of the house of God. The princes and the leaders of the tribes donated large amounts of gold and silver. The next day, in grati­ tude, David o ered sacri ces of one thousand bullocks, one thousand rams, and one thousand  mbs. It- was then that Solomon was publicly anointed with great ceremony.
5. DAVID BUILDS UP A GREAT KINGDOM
It was David who united the Israelites and made
them a great nation. He built up a powerful state. This he was able to do because the neighboring nations were small and generally at war with one another, but especially because the Lord was on his side. The most powerful of David's enemies were the Philistines. They used chariots, horses, and armor in battle. They always had large numbers of soldiers to  ght for them. They received their recruits from Crete, their mother country. Besides, the Philistines had overcome the Hittites, in the southeastern part of Palestine. The Hittites, ·or Chanaanites, were powerful men of great height, and the Philistines put them into their armies when they fought the
Israelites.
A change in the- way of  ghting had begun during
