Antiochus Eupator later sent two armies to Pales­ tine. His object was to force Judas Machabeus to allow Alcimus to perform the duties of the high priest. The second of these armies was under Nicanor.
Judas tried to drive Nicanor out of the country. He met his troops at Bethoron. Judas had only three thousand men in his army. Before the battle, Onias the high priest and Jeremias the prophet appeared in a vision to Judas and promised him victory. Thirty­ ve thousand Syrian soldiers were killed and Nicanor was slain.
