12 GOD PROMISES MAN A REDEEMER
They were ashamed and frightened, and they tried to hide themselves from the sight of God. But nothing can be hidden from God.
"Why hast thou eaten of the fruit whereof I com manded that thou shouldst not eat?'' God asked Adam. Adam answered, ''The woman whom Thou gavest me to be my companion gave me of the tree, and I did
eat.''
Then God said to Eve, ''Why hast thou done this1'' Eve answered, ''The serpent deceived me and I did
eat."
5. Gon PROMISES A REDEEMER
Then God said to the serpent: ''Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed among all the beasts of the earth. Thou shalt go upon thy breast and thou shalt eat earth all the days of thy life. I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; she shall crush thy head.''
To Adam, God said, ''Because thou hast listened to the voice of the woman and hast eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat, cursed is the earth in thy work. Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and in the sweat of thy face thou shalt earn thy bread till thou return to the earth out of which thou wast taken; for dust thou art and into dust thou shalt return."
God clothed Adam and Eve with garments of skins and cast them out of the Garden of Paradise, and stationed Cherubim and a aming sword to guard it, so that they could never return.
