CHRIST, THE GREAT TEACHER 389
ant, falling down, begged for mercy. 'Have patience with me,' he said, 'and I will pay thee all.'
"Moved with pity, the king let him .go and canceled the debt. But when the servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow servants that owed him a hundred pence. Laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying, 'Pay what thou owest.' His fellow servant, falling down, besought him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will pay thee all.'
"But he would not and went and cast him into prison.
"Now his fellow servants, seeing what was done, were very much grieved, and they came and told their lord all about it. Then the king called him and said, 'Thou wicked servant. I forgave thee all the debt
because thou didst ask me. Shouldst thou not, then, have had mercy on thy fellow servant, even as I had mercy on thee 1'
''Then the king delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt. So also shall My heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your heart.''
According to the Law of Moses, a man who was in T jured might seek to avenge himself in certain cases; lawef but the law of love, which our Savior preached, per man mitted no revenge. Jesus said to the people, ''You have heard it said, 'Take an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist evil,
but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him
also the left. And if a man go to law, and take away
thy coat, let him also have thy cloak."
