move God to have mercy on him. But our Lord knew that people who have great riches are so taken up with their money and the things that it will buy, that they easily forget that all that they are and all that they have belongs to God. They think that they can live without Him, and pay no attention to the inspirations of His grace.
"We have left all things," Peter said to Jesus. ''Behold, we have left all things, and have followed Thee. What, therefore, shall we have1" Jesus answered, ''Amen, I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the day of glory when the Son of Man shall sit on the seat of His majesty, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for My sake, shall receive a hundredfold in this life, and
'' shall possess life everlasting.''
One day, Jesus was sitting in the Temple, near the

treasury, or the place where the people came to make their o erings of money. Many rich people came and cast in large sums. Then there came a widow, who cast in two brass mites, which was a very small amount -less than one cent in value. Calling His disciples to His side, Jesus said to them, ''Amen, I say to you, this poor widow hath cast in more than all the rest. For they did cast in of their abundance, but she of her want hath cast in all she had, even her last penny.''
Each year all the Jews, rich and poor alike, whether they 1·1ved m palest·me or m fore1gn 1ands, were re- quired by the Law of Moses to pay a tax, known as the
