CHRIST FOUNDS HIS CHURCH 451
But he answered, 'Amen, I say to you, I know you not.' ''
Then said Jesus, "Watch ye, therefore, because you lmo,v not the day nor the hour.''
2. JESUS PROMISES THE BREAD OF LIFE
In the Book of Wisdom there is a sentence which reads, "My delights are to be with the children of men.'' These words express beautifully the great love of the Son of God for human beings. We want to be near to those we love, and when the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity became Man, it was with the intention of remaining on earth until the end of the world. By showing men how to be good, He could make them happy. By keeping them close to God, He eould give them a foretaste of the joys of Heaven. After His ascension into Heaven, they would not be able to see Him face to face, but they could see Him in a di erent way in His Church. Being members of the Church, they would be united with Him most
closely, as th branches are united with the vine, or as the di erent parts of the body are joined to the head.
But it was not enough for the heart of Jesus to be e united with human beings in a general way. He Gr
wanted to unite Himself with each and every individual soul. In order to accomplish this, He worked the greatest of all His miracles. He instituted the Blessed Eucharist. But the hearts of men had to be prepared for this wonder of wonders. He could not tell them about it all at once; therefore, He revealed it to them little by little.
