466 CHRIST REDEEMS THE WORLD
But when the rst also came, they thought that they should receive more, and they also received every man a penny. And, receiving it, they murmured against the master of the house, saying, 'These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us that have borne the burden of the day and the heat.'
''But, he, answering, said to one of them, 'Son, I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a penny7 Take what is thine and go thy way. I will also give to this last even as to thee.' ''
Early one morning, Jesus came into the Temple. When the people saw Him, they gathered around Him. Jesus then sat down, and He taught them. A number of Pharisees came up to Him, bringing with them a woman who had been taken in adultery. They said to Him, ''Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery. Now, Moses and the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest Thou7''
This question was intended to entrap our blessed Savior. If He told them to follow the Law of Moses and put the woman to death, they would say that He did not love sinners. If He set her free, they could accuse Him before the high priest of breaking the law.
Jesus answered them not a word, but, stooping down, He began to write with His nger on the ground.
They watched Him for a moment and then they reĀ peated their question. Rising up, He said to them, "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the rst stone at her.'' Then, stooping down again, He continued to write on the ground.
