him, said, ''This man also was with Jesus of Naz­ areth." Again Peter denied this with an oath. He said, "I know not the man." From where Peter was standing, it was possible to look into the room in the palace where the trial of Jesus was being held. He could see our Savior in the midst of His accusers. An hour passed, and Peter began to breathe easier. He felt sure that he had convinced those who were stand­
ing around the  re that he was not a disciple of Jesus. He began to talk to the man standing next to him. Looking at him in surprise, the man said, '' Certainly thou art one of His disciples, for thy accent betrayeth thee. Thou art a Galilean.'' Hearing this, another of the servants of the high priest came up and, after look­ ing very intently at Peter, said to him, '' Did I not see thee in the garden with Him?" This servant happened to be a relative of Malchus, whose ear Peter had cut o .
Then Peter began to curse and to swear, saying, "I know not this man of whom you speak.''
Just then the cock crew, and Jesus, turning, looked at Peter.
Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken, "Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice.'' Bursting into tears, he pushed his way through the crowd and, rushing through the gate of the palace, went outside and wept bitterly.
