He opened His mouth in prayer. "Father, forgive them, He said, "for they know not what they do."
Yet, even in His agony, the enemies of our Savior did not spare Him. A number of the chief priests and Pharisees stood at the foot of the cross and mocked Him. ''Vah,'' they said, wagging their heads, ''Thou that destroyest the Temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it, save Thyself; come down from the cross! He saved others," they shouted, "Himself He cannot save. Let Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe. He trusted in God; let God now deliver Him. For He said, 'I am the Son of God.' '' The soldiers also
