Chanaanite is usually given. There they built cities and produced metal weapons, ornaments and very  ne pottery. Those who lived on the coast be­ came traders, while those who lived in the mountains were herdsmen. They were all idolaters, and wor­ shiped the gods Baal and Astarte. Their territory ex­ tended from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, and from Gaza in the south to the Leontes River
in the north.
