1. JESUS RISES GLORIOUSLY FROM THE DEAD
T The Sabbath was over. The rst rosy glow of the dawn could be seen in the east, announcing that it was Sunday, the rst day of the week. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord de­ scended from Heaven, and coming, rolled back the stone and sat upon it. And his countenance was as lightning and his garments white as snow. Seeing him, the guards were struck with terror and fell faint­
ing to the ground.
Shortly after sunrise, Mary Magdalen and Mary,
the mother of James and Salome, came to the tomb of Jesus, bringing with them sweet spices with which to anoint the body. On the way they said to one another, ''Who shall roll us back the stone from the door of the sepulcher.'' For it was very large, and they knew that they were not strong enough to move it back themselves.
When they came to the sepulcher, they found that the stone had been rolled back, d going in, they found that the body of the Lord Jesus was gone. The guards, too, had disappeared.
By this time the apostles had gathered together in the upper room of the Cenacle, where Jesus had eaten with them the Last Supper. Knowing this, Mary has-
