The country over which Joseph was made the ruler occupied the northeastern angle of Africa. It inĀ cluded the delta and the valley of the Nile River. The valley is about ve hundred miles long and from ten to thirty miles wide. The Red Sea and Arabia are on the east of this fertile strip. The Mediterranean Sea is on the north.
The fertility of Egypt depended upon the over ow of the Nile. The ood had to reach the height of twenty- ve feet to insure good crops for the season. If the ood were lower than eighteen feet, the crops failed and famine followed.
Joseph married Aseneth, the daughter of Putiphare, a priest of Heliopolis. This marriage gave Joseph a high social standing, because the priests belonged to
