I first became aware of the Christian fish symbol when I was in the navy. We
had arrived in Ephesus on a tour. The guide took us to all the usual places,
told us various stories and walked a lot. The old city was large.
Finally we walked to where the sea use to come to the city. The old bay had
filled up with silt and it was quite a way to the water which could be seen in
the distance. It was here on the stone that one could see various symbols
carved. I suppose to let travelers know that there were certain types of
businesses, associates and friends to be found here. It was here that I saw
the symbol of the Fish.
It has been said that according to one ancient story, when a Christian meet a
stranger on the road, that he, the Christian would draw one arc of the simple
fish in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they
were in good company.
The fish symbol is called by the Greek word for fish (ICHTUS), of which the
early Christians turned into an acrostic, each of the letters stands for
something to be remembered.
I = Jesus, C = Christ, TH = God’s U = Son, S = Savior
The fish was not only a common food of the day, feeding many, it was also
used by Jesus during his ministry, showing many spiritual ideas.
