What Not to Do on Twitter
Finally, there are many differences between an email, a Facebook post, a text message, and a Tweet. It is important to keep personal and professional messaging habits separate, yet be real, warm, and winsome! It is an easy trap to get wordy, but that will make you lose all your followers on Twitter. So here is a set of good commandments to follow when posting to Twitter.
What Thou Shalt Not Tweet:
1) Less is more. If you cannot say it in 140 characters, do not say it on Twitter! Concise is the key.
2) Do not misspell, use bad grammar, or purposefully leave out letters to fit it all in! Clever wording is compelling.
3) Do not write a sentence that starts on one Tweet and continues on another Tweet!
4) Do not Re-Tweet too much! Keep it to one per day to be safe.
5) Do not Re-Tweet your past Tweets! If it is that important, Pin it to the top. Old news is ignored.
6) Do not use Internet slang for professional organization Tweets! Leave “LOL” for your personal texts.
7) Do not use more than 1 hashtag per Tweet! Got more? Save them for Facebook. You will lose followers on Twitter.
8) Do not be all business! Twitter is a great way to communicate with your fans, address their needs, and engage with others.
9) Unless all your followers have a PhD, do not make your wordage above a 4th grade level! If the followers are made to feel stupid, they will not follow.
10) Do not forsake Twitter! Make it a habit to make posts daily, even just one, or you may lose your followers.
