What is Analog Video versus Digital Video? Both of these video formats can provide a great picture for your display, but there
are some differences in how they work that are important to know. Analog signal is
the older of the two formats, but is still very common today. This is the type of video
Composite Component S-Video that gets ‘grainy’ or ‘fuzzy’ as the signal strength weakens. Common formats
include:
Composite, Component, S-Video, Coax, VGA, DVI-A, DVI-I*
Digital video is a newer format, but all new computers and televisions have a
digital input. This signal, rather than the picture degrading if the signal weakens,
Coax VGA DVI-A will generally just cut out. Digital signals tend to provide a crisper, higher
resolution picture then Analog. Common formats include:
HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI-D, DVI-I*
One important thing to note is that these two signals are not directly compatible
with each other. A cable with a HDMI connector
DVI-I* HDMI DisplayPort DVI-D on one end and a VGA on the other would not
work, for example. An active conversion, usually
provided by a small powered box, is required to
convert an analog signal to a digital one.
* A DVI-I cable is capable of transmitting either analog or digital signal, but cannot convert the signal from one to the other.
