Balanced Audio vs. Unbalanced Audio
Balanced Audio uses impedance balanced lines to interconnect audio equipment. XLR TRS Ring TS Sleeve Tip
Balanced connections use three conductor connectors. Most common in professional Tip
settings is the XLR connector. It is also sometimes referred to as a "cannon plug" or
"cannon connector". Also used for this application are TRS Plugs. They derive their
name from the different functions of the sections of the plug. Tip, Ring and Sleeve.
(see diagram). They are also often referred to as .25" (6.3mm) 3 channel audio phone Male Female Sleeve Insulator Insulator
plugs. Their appearance is similar to the .25" (6.3mm) stereo plugs used for head
phones, even though the two different applications utilize them differently. The durable construction of the XLR makes it ideal for microphones. Most, if not all, high end microphones make use of this interface.
In contrast the TRS smaller form factor makes it ideal for mixer inputs/outputs allowing for greater port density.
Balanced Audio Connectors are typically Low Impedance Interfaces. By connecting the balanced lines to identical impedances at both source and load, it allows any differential amplifier to filter out any EMI
(Electro-Magnetic-Interference) that the cable may have picked up or generated along the two signal lines.
Unbalanced Audio in contrast uses a two conductor system whereby the shield must carry the return signal. Often used for this application are TS Plugs. Similar in appearance to their TRS siblings, these plugs
derive their name similarly. Tip and Sleeve. (see diagram). Noise that is induced onto an Unbalanced line will typically be modulated onto the signal being carried, whereas Balanced lines would not experience
this issue. Ground loops are another issue to contend with Unbalanced lines. Unbalanced Audio Connectors are typically high impedance interfaces. Unbalanced Audio is typical for most home audio equipment.
Unbalanced Signals can be converted to Balanced signals by the use of a Balun (Balanced/Unbalanced) adapter typically run through a DI (Direct Input) box.
