262: MEDICAL TREATMENT
TO ENABLE
FULFILLMENT OF A
WIFE’S CONJUGAL
RIGHTS
ɳ Question
This case concerns a 50 year old teacher and father of four children,
who was involved in a road accident. The accident left him with
fractures in the pelvis and a large tear in the posterior bladder. The
damage was repaired surgically. His post-operative urination after
surgery is normal. He has not suffered from any other illnesses in
his past. The surgical intervention and the trauma to the area have
left him unable to achieve an erection and fulfill the mitzvah of onah
(a wife’s conjugal rights). His androgenic [male hormonal] system is
unaffected. The patient describes a lack of emotion, a state arising
from apathy in consequence of the surgery. His behavior and general
functioning are otherwise excellent.
The inability to achieve erection is common following these types
of surgeries. In certain cases it disappears after about a year but in
other cases it is permanent. The recommended treatment in this case
is self-injection with Papeverine before intercourse. This is not pain-
ful owing to the use of a superfine needle, an injected substance that
does not hurt and the use of a special method of penetrating the skin.
This treatment has become widespread in recent years. The patient is
not interested in taking this treatment.
