Bordeaux
It is difficult to know where to start with Bordeaux, it is complex, it is very celebrated and it can be very expensive! If we can leave you with one tip it would be the difference between the Left Bank and the Right Bank. The Gironde River divides Bordeaux and each side of the river consists of different appellations. The main thing to understand is that due to the differing terroirs the Right Bank is predominately made up of wines made with Merlot and the Left bank wines have a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. One thing that this teaches us is that wines from the left bank are often better to drink with more age due to the ageing potential of Cabernet Sauvignon compared to Merlot. Yet, it is important to remember that many wines produced in Bordeaux are blends of at least three varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The simple term for this style is Bordeaux Blend and this method is commonly used across all wine growing regions around the world.
