It has long been debated that the first ever plantings of vines were in Lebanon. It is believed that vines were first in Lebanon around 750BC, so we’re not going to argue that they’ve been making wine for a very long time. Although the region has suffered severe unrest over the years, Lebanon still produces approximately 8.5 million bottles of wine a year. Generally speaking, most of the grapes planted in the country are relations to Bordeaux and Rhone varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
The Batroun region is home to the Batroun Mountain ranges and the Ixsir vineyards proudly boast some of the highest vineyards in the world, reaching up to around 1,800 metres. When growing vines, it is imperative to have balance. In this case the vines get long hot sunny days which help the natural sugars and then benefit from altitude as the evenings are cool which then brings acidity. This balance of acidity and sweetness is how wines achieve their structure.
