New Zealand
When we think about Kiwi wine we think about Sauvignon Blanc and New Zealand have certainly done a great job putting this varietal on the map. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that NZ started to plant this grape, but, ever since it has been an incredible success story. Sauvignon Blanc thrives in cool climate conditions as the key to a decent Sauvignon blanc is a high level of acidity. There is also plenty of sunshine, which ripens the grapes, (as we mentioned in Lebanon) this balance is key to growing perfect grapes. There are now signs that the SB trend is slowing and winemakers are looking for new grapes to grow. My money would be on Gruner Veltliner and Riesling.
