The top spiral represents the separation of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. The bottom spiral represents the geneologies of those direct descendants of those ancestors dipicted. The figure in between the two spirals represents Toi Kai Rakau, one of the first Māori ancestors to settle in Aotearoa.
